What is SCORM?

SCORM stands for ‘Shareable content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is a collection of standards and specifications for web-based electronic educational technology. SCORM based Cloud is compliancy cloud to deliver e-learning. It keeps the exact SCORM standards in concern. A SCORM compliant LMS is the most effective way of learning by industry standards.

History of SCORM:

Back in the late 1990s, the U.S. government was a vast user of online training. What they realized was that they were procuring the same training over and over. However, they couldn’t reuse it across various departments because each had their own LMS. To rectify this situation, they tasked a small research laboratory, ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning). Consequently, it was used to develop common specifications and standards for e-learning, and thus SCORM was born in 2001.

Why SCORM?

It is always advisory to have a SCORM compliant LMS. The technical standard helps you in uploading content which orients with the LMS software. Naturally, it could be really important to organizations when the training managers plan to train the employees. Since they want to see some quick action on their jobs, this is effective. To make learner’s experience more engaging and fun, the uploaded SCORM content must be in parallel with the standards set. The notable versions of SCORM are SCORM 1.1, SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, Experience API. Nowadays SCORM compliancy has become more of a necessity rather than a choice.

How SCORM Cloud Works

WebLearning for L&D commonly called as Web-based learning has got much attention as being an incredible and effective opportunity to train employees nowadays.

One can clearly understand how the terms computer-based training, online learning, technology-based instruction, e-learning, e.t.c evolved from weblearning. It is the first to get traction since the boom of internet and world wide web. WebLearning is one way to learn, using web-based tools in a learning process. In other words, learners use computers mainly to interact with the teacher, other fellows. Elearning material to be shared which are available virtually. Web-based learning consists of technology that supports traditional classroom training and online learning environments.

Exclusive web-based courses are wholly based on computer and online possibilities. In this case, all the learning activities and communication are done online. Web-based courses may also have some face-to-face sessions besides the distant learning tasks. In this case, they can be called ‘blended courses’. They blend web-based activities with face-to-face activities. Ever growing technologies ensure that WebLearning for L&D offers a reliable, secure, scalable, easy-to-use next-gen solution to the co-existing offline classroom learning and training.

WebLearning as a solution which can replace chalk and board

Content which can be accessed for the sake of weblearning plays a major role as tools like articulate 360 and storyline complement weblearning for better learning outcomes. This is due to the creation of multi-device responsive and collaborative courses which are compliant on the web. That being the course perspective, technological compliance is due to the advanced and easy-to-use SCORM LMS for uploading the digitized content. These SCORM LMS are available on mobile as well.

WebLearning is formal or informal.

Formal weblearning for L&D is purposed and learning activities are organized by teachers which is held and managed in corporate companies and educational institutions. Informal weblearning takes place while one is searching material from the Internet. It is self-paced, depending on one’s goals to learn.

If we consider the formal weblearning, corporate companies are the major stakeholders which require and can use the advantage of weblearning. Because it is:

Collaborative:

Discussions with the trainer as well co-participants can be held which parallels with the interaction during offline training helping the learner to get most out of the training.

Asynchronous:

Learners and trainers can access the web-based courses irrespective of time and location limitations. All one needs is a computer with internet. Queries and discussion get in sync as soon as one logs into their respective accounts.

Self-driven:

The SCORM, AICC, TinCan technologies through which weblearning is made available helps in accessing the web-based courses for the learners and delivering the courses for the trainers all by their own.

Engaged learning:

Content digitization tools like Articulate 360, Articulate Storyline 2 make the learning interactive and fun. Articulate 360 is a diverse tool suite which can help us create formal as well as informal courses.

All an L&D manager or an HR manager has to do is manage the content management system: which could be an LMS or HRMS. Manage your own virtual classroom with ease from any internet-enabled computer anywhere, anytime. Weblearning is not only making a learners job more engaging as well as result-oriented. But also saving manager’s time and resources to focus on other important aspects for team’s growth or organization’s growth.

Getting bored and wanna play games? You can easily get a host of options to choose from on your mobile.

Commuting to work and couldn’t find time to read the morning newspaper? Catch all the latest news on the mobile phone which it serves you on a digital platter!

Have some bank transactions to make but don’t have the time to actually visit the bank – you are just a few clicks away from that otherwise cumbersome task.

Conceptualization

In a nutshell, the idea being insinuated at is also the one that you have rightly inferred by now. Mobile phones have invaded nearly every existing realm of our everyday lives. Their utility spans across the entire spectrum of our requirements. Right from something as trivial as killing time when bored, to something as prime as making secure bank transactions. Mobiles are being employed at every other juncture.

In this light, the invasion of mobiles in the e-learning sphere is no longer imminent, but has already transpired and is here to stay and evolve. Mobile learning is rapidly emerging as the best bet available in terms of platforms existing in the e-learning sphere. It can also take the shape of an LMS and assist the learners to perform even better.

Mobile learning offers manifold advantages as compared to its contemporary traditional alternatives.

ABA-hero-6

The advantages of mobile learning are aplenty and have been enlisted and discussed point wise.

  • Content in Micro-Chunks:

Mobile learning amalgamated with microlearning is undoubtedly the best concoction, which if deployed to completion can revolutionize the e-learning cosmos. Its preliminary praxis in the L&D industry can restructure, refine and redefine the contemporary digital training pedagogy.

With training happening in compact, well-aligned snippets – the training process becomes well structured, better trackable and interesting, all at the same time. Also, it enables the learner/employee to have hands-on in-service training on the knowledge gained before it gets lost in the process of going through that entire never-ending course material.

  • Ease of Access:

Mobile phones clearly have a ubiquitous presence – and have permeated even the remotest parts of the globe. With almost every employee possessing a mobile, employers can leverage that availability for a double-ended advantage benefiting both them and the employees.

Uploading, assigning and accessing the assigned content can all be managed through the Cloud platform.

With the availability of Cloud we obtain a two-fold advantage:

  • Enormous Storage Space:

Storage space can never be an impediment in terms of storing content data for both the giving and receiving end users as cloud storage provides you an enormous space to be availed.

  • Versatile accessibility across all supported devices:

Accessing content becomes inordinately versatile in the sense that the content can be accessed on any mobile phone provided it falls under the software frameworks that support the content.

The familiarity with functioning on mobiles and the comprehensive interface makes the accessibility even simpler.

I-read-a-whole-book-in-the-mobile-and-this-is-what-happened

  • Learn while on the move:

Going by the literal interpretation of mobile learning, we can draw the inference that it is a learning that can be achieved on the move because it is available while on the move.

Employees can train themselves when free or even while traveling, where they just have to log in to attempt a bite-sized course module and test themselves on the same. Thus training becomes easier, faster, convenient and more interesting. The trainee can train himself/herself in his/her spare time and apply the earned knowledge capital when at the workplace. The training content can be easily assimilated and applied if provided and received in that fashion. Also, the maintenance of uniformity with respect to the entire course structure available to all trainees is ensured – courtesy – the uniformly doled out training content.

  • Engaging interfaces and smart reports for performance tracking:

Assessments can be created in an engaging interface. Gamified assessment engines are employed to achieve that. This renders the assessment modules more interesting and gives it a touch of interactivity.Another advantageous feature to be exploited is the smart performance tracker functionality.

Employing this feature allows generation of performance reports and the training system itself can discern the weak zones of the trainee wherein he/she needs further improvement. Thus it generates target zones with a scope of improvement by mapping their performance with specific and apposite competencies.

    Conclusion

Training can thus be assigned and managed based on such reports thereby enabling and assuring efficiency and optimal growth with minimal efforts. Thus mobile learning has ushered in a metamorphosis in the bedrock of Learning & Development. We, Stratbeans, are the providers of such mobile learning tools apart from a wide range of e-learning solutions.

What was covered in the Certified Articulate Storyline 2 Training?

A successful Articulate Storyline 2 training was conducted by Ron Price in Pune. It went on for a well over three days in which both the Basic and Advanced course were covered. The class comprised of individuals from organizations such as Bajaj Allianz, Essar, Sify, Capita Co, Trent-TATA, etc. Majority of the participants had been sent by their employer. They had limited knowledge of the program. The Articulate workshop aimed at people with several levels of work experience. It ranged from no prior experience up to several months of experience.

Day One

The first day of the three day workshop, focus was placed on the building blocks of Articulate Storyline: slides, layers, triggers, and states. The participants also got to learn a bit video and audio tricks. The workshop had a flexible schedule and provided lots of opportunities to practice. The workshop had a pleasant learning environment where all participants were given the chance to ask for help or more time. The participant’s got to understand basically on how much time one should invest on a task and how much time spent is actually worth the benefit.

The workshop had a “tell, show, and do” model and each participant had followed the “Bring Your Own Laptop” (BYOL) rule. The participants worked on the problems while the instructor demonstrated via a projector. A major takeaway was that the participants got to learn various ways of solving a problem in Storyline 2. The participants clearly got to understand that there are some methods that are generally more efficient and faster than others. So ultimately, the participants got to learn various short-cuts and best practices which would help in streamlining their course development process.

Day Two

The second day of the Basic class included the Storyline player, publishing, quizzes, and scenarios. The participants had the chance to create various types of assessments and got to learn about the advantages of free form questions. The workshop also covered how to create and work with branching scenarios. The third day was the Advanced class. On the last day, the participants were introduced to variables (text, number, and true/false), JavaScript options, conditions, and progress meters.

Why We Recommend Stratbeans’ Storyline Training?

As a learner, you can question yourself “Can’t I learn everything by exploring myself via online guides?” Of course, you could learn everything that is taught in the class by yourself. However, the training provides couple of unique advantages over self-study:

    • You get taught how to work on Storyline 2 by an expert and with a hands-on, purposeful learning as opposed to randomly searching out answers on the internet.
    • Our trainers provide the learners with steps of exactly how to do something while making sure efficient or “best practice” methods of accomplishing tasks are covered.
    • Our trainers constantly challenge the learners to consider how they would tackle a problem.
  • The workshop makes the learners “think like Storyline” which enables learners to utilize more of the Storyline’s capabilities as opposed to being stuck in a linear “slide, next slide, next slide” mentality.

This Advanced workshop will teach you many new methods and tricks even if you are an experienced Storyline user. Our certified Storyline 2 trainers make sure that the Basic class flows seamlessly into the Advanced class. In summary, Stratbeans’ Storyline training course can greatly improve your abilities.

Our Tips For Those of You Planning to Attend the Training

Our recommendation would be that if you are planning to take the training, you at least play around with the program. With a little familiarity with Storyline 2, you will keep you from feeling overwhelmed.

The post What Types of LMS are there? appeared first on Stratbeans.

]]>

Organizations today rely heavily on Learning Management Systems (LMS) to roll out online learning programs, deliver training materials, and manage employee learning objectives at scale. Whether it’s compliance training, employee training, or external training for partner training, choosing the right LMS ensures a well-structured knowledge-sharing and training program that fosters employee development and meets business needs.

All LMS platforms share a core functionality: to manage, distribute, and track training programs across a scattered workforce. Selecting the right system requires a clear understanding of your training goals, your business training strategy, and your user experiences.

Free vs. Commercial LMS Platforms

Open-source LMS solutions allow organizations to access the source code and build personalized learning paths, often leveraging content creation tools. These software solutions, while flexible, tend to require strong technical skills and often depend on online forums or manual data entry for support.

In contrast, commercial LMS platforms offer intuitive interfaces, seamless integration, and responsive customer support. Their user-friendly interface allows for quick deployment, particularly beneficial when the organization lacks a dedicated IT team.

Cloud-Based vs. Hosted LMS

Commercial LMS platforms are available as cloud-based LMS or hosted solutions. A cloud-based solution provides learning at scale, ideal for sudden spikes in active users. These SaaS offerings allow automatic updates, freeing up bandwidth, and no infrastructure costs.

Meanwhile, hosted LMS options give full control to your IT department, enabling customization of the learning portal, user management, and branding. This approach suits organizations needing deep customization, such as educational institutions or enterprises with strict security features.

Content Creation Capabilities

Modern LMS platforms vary in their content management capabilities. Some function solely as training content distributors, requiring a separate authoring tool or third-party integrations like SCORM-compliant educational content. Platforms like ATUM LMS and Rockstar Learning Platform come with built-in tools and content authoring tools, making it easier for instructional designers to craft effective learning experiences

Stratbeans, for instance, provides complete courses, SCORM-compliant materials, and even pre-built courses aligned with training objectives.

Integration Capability and Features

Today’s LMS must offer strong integration capabilities with internal systems like HRMS, PMS, and external platforms such as social learning tools (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn). Stratbeans supports Single Sign-On (SSO), allowing for seamless integration without needing extensive custom development.

A robust LMS should also feature reporting functionalities, assessment tools, and user feedback systems to track learner progress, employee progress, and adapt to changing training efforts. AI-enabled tools are becoming more popular, automating processing tools and helping administrators make informed decisions.

Considerations for Your Organization

The LMS you choose should align with your training audience—whether internal staff or external users—and support varied skill levels through blended learning, mobile learning, or cohesive learning environments. Consider your budget considerations, pricing models, and whether the platform offers tiered pricing or additional features.

Also, remember to evaluate user engagement, learner roles, and user satisfaction in the decision-making process. These factors contribute to employee retention, business growth, and career growth—ensuring your training system supports future growth.

Conclusion

Making a well-informed decision about an LMS is a critical decision that will influence your organization’s knowledge retention, learning process, and business goals. Whether you’re an educational facility, a business owner, or an elearning industry leader, selecting the right LMS with the right essential tools and key features ensures that your learning management systems drive success in today’s digital platform era.
